Quick Sunday Update

Howdy, fellow ROWers. I hope you all had a more successful week than I did. Sick kids and craziness at work sapped my energy. But I won’t waste your time with whining about what went wrong.

The truth is, when I did sit down to write the next part of Flight, I found an issue in my outline that needed working out, and focused some energy there. My word count on my work in progress is just 1,100 for the week, including what I’ve done so far this morning. Dismal! But on the bright side, plenty of room for improvement in the coming week!

I did fit in a couple thousand more words brainstorming on my “something new.” I’m betting my writer friends have strong feelings about letting the muse speak when you’re in the middle of writing a book…I just can’t help myself. When I set a deadline on one project, my muse tends to wake up and say, “I’ve been meaning to introduce an idea…” I think it goes back to school, and how I tend to perform well under pressure. So I add to that pressure cooker until I can really feel it, and then somehow the work is more satisfying…? I’m such a kook. Ha!

So writers — what do you think? Do you torture yourself in a similar fashion? LOL.

Also, I wanted to let you know the ladies at Talk Supe book blog interviewed me about my work, and the interview will post tomorrow. Fun!

  1. I absolutely torture myself in a similar fashion. 🙂 If you don’t give yourself impossible goals, then you’ll never find out what your actual limits are.

And I love that you focused not on your word count, but on all the room you have to improve next week. Very positive; I may steal your attitude. 🙂

  2. That’s great (about the writing, not the sick kids…ha!) I’ve had a busy week with wrestling, so I’ve still not finished the ending, but the first read through is complete! Today is dinner with some family and preparing for tomorrow! I hope to begin read through on Monday morning and tighten up this story even more. Good luck for a great kick off to ths work week!

  3. Used to do the same thing in college! Anytime I had a paper to write, I’d wait until the last possible second. My theory was, I don’t have time to waste, so I have no choice or time but to get it done right. If I worked on it any earlier, I’d figure I’d have plenty of time to “fix things”, then never do.

I find that I do that with my writing. I wait till the last possible minute (deadline looming) and cram it all in. I get my best ideas that way.

  4. I’m much more of a pantser than I’m comfortable with- I actually have outline envy! That’s one of my goals for this round- to work on using tools like character interviews and outlines and such more than I do- the ones I work from now are rather loose and tend to just be bulleted scribbles on long sheets of paper. And btw, I think your word count rocks!

  5. OMG, over 1100 words with sick kids (in PLURAL) and crazy work??! I bow to you! You did way more than I would have gotten done and I loved your update.

I hope next week goes better and keep rockin’ the ROW!

  6. I have made some notes on a shiny new idea so I can focus on my WIP and not worry about ‘losing’ the other ideas if I don’t get to it for a while! I do keep adding little bits and pieces to those notes though…..

Here is to a successful week ahead!

  7. I’ll jot down just enough to get the shiny idea out of my head, and then get back to what I need to finish. Works for me, but it can be hard!
